The guys over at DrivingItalia.net have launched a new interview series, talking to some of our community’s best known modders.

Kicking the series off is feels3, creator of some very impressive rFactor 2 tracks.

In the interview, he talks about his start into modding, the upcoming Interlagos track for rFactor 2, Assetto Corsa and more. feels3 also commented on the possibilities of the rFactor 2 engine:

I want to be honest: I thought I would have never enjoyed rFactor 2, but your tracks made me change my mind. How much room for improvements is there in this engine? Are there things that you consider a must have in a modern title and that you would like to see here in order to improve your works?

I’m not a programmer so it’s hard for me to judge how far we can go with visual quality in rfactor 2. From my experience I know that shaders can make huge difference (you can see what modern shaders can do with rfactor 1 by using Simracing.pl shaders, written by Kszysztof Szczech) and if I could pick up one area where we can expect improvements, that would be it. Advanced shaders and materials.

But even advanced shaders won’t give you high quality tracks or cars just like that. No matter of engine capabilities, there is still very important factor in modding. It’s an artist and it’s up to him to create high quality stuff. And in my opinion this is the area where we can expect the biggest improvements and progress. People are learning every day, and I have no doubts that we will see a lot of quality stuff on rfactor 2.

// Start Procedures

. Race run in a Practice Session
. The track will be closed 20 minutes before race start
. Cars will be called out by order of the Qualifying Results
. Safety Car will wait for cars to join him on track
. Speed limit of 100 kph
. Start lining up side-by-side on the last straight
. Leader (and odd numbers) on the left side, even numbers on the right side
. Safety Car will enter the pits
. Leading car will keep pace to 100 kph
. Rolling start will take place at the start line
. Green flag will be given through text chat
. Never come to a complete stop
. If somebody has difficulties in front of you, continue at the designated pace

// Driver Swaps

. Make sure you have a button mapped for 'Passenger Select'.
. Make sure you have exactly the same setup, you can only change steering lock and brake bias.
. Load your setup and press the button 'Assign' to set it as your default setup
. The new driver as to turn Spectate 'ON' and then join the server.
. Click on your teammate's name and press the Passenger button.
. You should both see a message in the chatbox confirming the action. (You're now riding with...)
. Press 'Race' to get in the car.
. Current driver request a pit stop and select the new driver's name in the pit menu
. During the pit stop current driver will lose control of the car at the benefit of the new driver
. Past driver is safe to press escape as soon as the new driver drives away
. Past driver is now a spectator on the server

// Driver/Team Disconnections

. A member of the concerned team must contact the race direction via TeamSpeak
. Once reconnected to the server, you can resume the race immediately.

In every situation:
. Use TeamSpeak to contact the Race Direction
. Introduce yourself (Driver Name, Team Name, Car Number)

Note:
When your car is damaged badly,
go very cautiously to the pits (the speed limiter is a good helper) avoiding the ideal path to not disturb other competitors.

// Penalties

. "ESC" = 2 laps
. "ESC" without informing admins = 5 laps
. "Disconnected" = 0 laps
. Bad behaviours on track can be sanctionned by Drive-through or Stop and go. (Up to race direction discretion)
. The Race direction can assign warnings to teams in offenses. Several warnings can lead to penalties.

// In Case of Server crash

. Race placed under Red Flag procedure
. Drivers to rejoin the server
. Yellow Flag + PaceCar restart procedure.
. Restarting the race with due remaining race time
. Gaps in between cars limited to number of laps

//Red Flag
. The race is suspended ... but not over
. Everycar still on track have to rejoin their garage
. Teams disconnected have to rejoin the server and stay in their pitboxes
. Teams must wait for intructions via TS and/or Chat
. PaceCar parked at the end of the pitlane, waiting for instructions.
. Procedure followed by Yellow Flag and PaceCar restart procedures (read below)

//Yellow Flag & PaceCar restart:
. Cars on track
. Safety Car will wait for the leading car at the end of the pitlane
. Once positions sorted, Safety Car will drive around the track at 100kph
. Safety Car will stay on track as long as needed.
. Safety Car will enter the pits
. Leading car will keep pace to 100 kph
. Rolling start will take place at the start line
. Green flag will be given through text chat
